10 Songs I Can't Stand

Recently my kids showed me Rebecca Black's Friday video. I continue to be amazed at the kind of stuff that can go viral on the Internet. For some reason it got me thinking about lame songs. Below I have listed 10 songs that I really don't like. I don't listen to the radio much these days so most of these are old school 80's stuff. When these songs come on the radio, I change stations with the same intensity and speed that a vampires use to get out of the sunlight.

We built this City- Jefferson Starship
Walk Like an Egyptian- The Bangels
Luka- Suzanne Vega
Suddenly-Billy Ocean
Kokomo- The Beach Boys
Return to Pooh Corner (Christopher Robin song)- Kenny Loggins
Puttin' on the Ritz- Taco
Anything by REO Speedwagon- seriously anything.
The Monster Mash- Bobby "Borris" Picket
Break My Stride- Matthew Williams

I'm not trying to be rude to those artists, but there must be something in my DNA that makes these songs painful to listen to. I would rather listen to Escape (aka the Pina Colada song) by Rupert Holmes than any of those songs.

PS- I know music preferences are very subjective so if I stepped on your toes by naming a song you like, then I hope there are no hard feelings. I happen to like certain songs that others feel are horrible like Love Shack and Rock me Amadeus.

I love Rock me Amadeus!
I thought I was the only one.

You do know that I now have all those songs, playing in my head, like a running CD?

'You would rather listen to white noise than this?!?'
'Yeah, but UB40 *is* white noise, I guess, so you kind of got me there...'

*real conversation that happened to me, but names were changed to protect the innocent, oops except mine.

Pretty much anything Duran Duran sets me twitching.

And Love Shack is pure musical genius right there!

Eric- I totally agree. UB40 has the whiniest sound. I hate Red Red Wine.

Kal-I don't know how I missed Walking on sunshine. That definitely belongs on the list.

Horse With No Name

Nothing can compare with the speed with which I reject that song. I don't know why, unless it's overexposure in my youth.

Ugh!

What about Mm Bop. Can't stand that song. And the Spice Girls - - that was a good time for music. I agree with you on your list though. I'm actually surprised there is not more Billy Ocean on there.

I was reading this to my daughter-out-law, outraged that you preferred Rupert Holmes over The Bangles, and then she said she had really happy childhood of the Pina Colada song.

Totally subjective.

Songs I immediately change the radio on:

1. Anything by Brittney Spears
2. Bad Romance
3. Born this Way
4. Anything with the words, "I called you on the phone, but you weren't home."

So subjective, who can complain? I mostly agree with you, with only a few exceptions. To the list I would add "So This is Christmas" as sung by Lennon/Ono. Cannot. Stand. That. Song. Like nails on a blackboard to my ears. And Cheryl Crow's "Soak Up the Sun." Blech. And anything, absolutely anything, by Britney Spears. She sounds like she just sucked helium out of a balloon.

Is Britney really singing? I thought that was all manufactured electronically? That's her real voice? Aaaarrrggghhhhh! Reject. Reject.

See, I was going to say that Love Shack is a song that I loathe. Anything by Mariah Carey just sends me through the roof. But We Built This City? It's a classic!
