The Benefits of Following My Blog

Last month I noticed that in a matter of hours I had lost 4 followers from my blog. I was surprised by this since most of them were good friends. It ended up just being a blogger glitch, but at the time it was almost too much for my fragile ego to take since I have worked so hard to get the few, yet awesome followers I have.
If you visit my blog more than a couple times a month then you are by definition following it. Most people don't realize that failing to honestly disclose when they are following a blog can cause their Internet connection to slow down. Others have reported painful and embarrassing medical conditions . It doesn't cost anything to follow and you don't even need to have your own blog. If you are embarrassed to admit you consistently read such tripe or are afraid of disclosing your true identity on the Internet then you can always use an anonymous identify. I speak with authority on that subject.

So why don't more people follow? I have analytics software and I see the regular traffic from repeat visitors, so I know you are out there. Please don't interpret my efforts to get more followers as a needy or egotistical quest...even though it is. I just know you are already stopping by so you may as well stand up and be counted. I'm starting a campaign to see how fast I can get 100 followers. I really do think my followers are great and I intend to start writing about them and promoting them more often. Your comments are awesome and always make this blog more entertaining.

Side note-I was doing a rough draft of this post this morning and accidentally published it for about one minute. I quickly changed it back to a draft, but not before it hit Kristina's reader. She wanted to know what happened to the post since it was no longer there and she had comments to share about this topic. Despite being the snuggie queen and having a massive following, I don't think she is a fan of Blogger's follower application so I am scared to post this and find out why, but here goes...

I don't know why more people don't follow. Initially, I used my blogroll to tell me when to check for new content, then decided I wanted to pump up my favorite bloggers by proclaiming my support to the world.

By the way -- I've yet to get Google-freaking-analytics to work. It came on for about 30 minutes when I first added the code, then stopped and hasn't worked since.

I felt so special when mine hit 100. Then I headed over to some other blogs which have ~600 and felt worthless all over again. So glad Blogger jumped on the myspace/facebook popularity contest thing.

It's funny...it doesn't matter how many or how few followers you have...if you're like me (and apparently you are), every single one of them counts.

Now that I have the number I have, I keep thinking..."I want MORE. How do I get MORE?"

I'm babbling, aren't I...

Chaka,
I must admit I am not a fan of you getting more followers because then my photo on your sidebar will be banished to the other side with the unseen followers. I may have to quit and re-follow to keep myself visible. Is that just too cocky? I really like my picture!

Seriously- you deserve every follower you get. Your blog is so funny. Best wishes on your quest for 100!

Haha! That's exactly what I was going to say. I HATE the Follower widget. I prefer Google reader for a lot of reasons. One, you can only follow 200 blogs. I won't say how many I have on my reader, but it's well over twice that.

And two, I think it breeds HUGE insecurities among fellow bloggers. I probably read at least one post a week from someone who lost a follower and is depressed, or is jealous that so and so has more followers, etc. I think some people use it as a Facebook, I have more friends that you, type of thing.

I am a regular reader and commenter on hundreds of blogs, and I "Follow" my blog friend's blogs, but sometimes, contests are off limits to me because I won't Follow someone, etc., and I don't understand what the hold about being a Follower is.

The only time I really like at mine is when I get a new follower and can see who it is. I can't do that with Reader, so that's nice to introduce myself.

Wow, I'm long winded! Oh, and people probably assume that I have hundreds of Followers, but it's actually not true. I won't divulge how many I do have. :)

So, just know that I am following you. And maybe actually stalking you in person. I'm just that good.

I'm the same way. When I lose a follower I think, "What did I do wrong?"

Then it moves to, "What an a-hole. I didn't want them following anyway."

Mine is the opposite problem. I have readers and I know most of them in our dance community. They are increasing every day. I received a follower. I cannot find out who he is. I cannot delete him, And in fact I am stuck with a followers flag on my dashboard. The reader know that I don't need followers so this follower simply does not read the blog. I need this? Now how do I get out of the whole followers thing. Cannot. I am stuck with their deals.
